Massage Therapy Course Descriptions

Semester I  
   

 

 

Anatomy and Physiology I

50 hours

1.75 credits

The purpose of this course, as a whole, is to make the student aware of the structure and function of the human body. Course content includes: Navigating the Human Body, Cells and Tissue, Integumentary System, Musculoskeletal System, and Nervous System.

Medical Terminology

18 hours

0.5 credits

Study the elements of medical terminology to enable students to break down and understand medical terms related to the different body systems and various diseases, pathologies and conditions, for business communications with medical professionals.

Onsite Massage I

90 hours

3.0 credits

Onsite Massage Style: 30 hr
Basic seated On-Site massage sequence which does not require any specialized or specific equipment.

Hand and Foot Massage: 10 hr
Study therapeutic massage of the hands and feet including foot soaks and cleaning preparations, with specific attention to application for clients with diabetes and other circulatory issues.

Seated Massage: 50 hr
Learn weight transfer, body mechanics, and a specific sequence of massage techniques for seated massage using a standard portable massage chair.

Amma Massage

50 hours

1.75 credits

Amma massage is the systematic treatment of the soft tissues of the body by use of pressure, friction, stroking, percussion, kneading, and manual vibration, range of motion for purposes of demonstrating muscle excursion or muscle flexibility and nonspecific stretching. The primary intent is to enhance or restore the health and well being of the client.

Fundamentals of Massage I

Learning Styles: 2 hr
Study multiple learning styles for the student to identify a learning style helpful to them.

Internet Research: 2 hr
Utilizing the internet to research topics relating to massage therapy.

Goal Planning: 6 hr
Learn to set and achieve goals for ourselves. Help clients to identify and handle obstacles

Impart of Touch: 2 hr
Learn the impact touch has in the therapeutic setting, in relation to society and in marketplace.

Marketing techniques for the massage professional: 8 hr
Study the use and application of marketing in massage therapy including discussion in marketplace standards.

Movement Exercises and Self-Care - Part I: 4 hr
Study different types of exercise that can help students understand body mechanics and movement for self-care as well as client referral for stress relief and/or workplace body mechanics. Instruction in different forms of movement therapies: Aikido (4 hr)

Anatomy and Physiology II

The purpose of this course, as a whole, is to make the student aware of the structure and function of the human body. Course content includes: Endocrine System, Sight and Sound, Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System, Lymphatic and Immune System, Digestive System, Urinary System and Reproductive System.

Kinesiology

45 hours

1.5 credits

Study of skeletal structures, muscles and the actions of muscles. Identifying names, locations, and attachments of skeletal muscles. Palpitate and identify the major skeletal muscles of the human body.

Fundamentals of Massage II

33 hours

Movement Exercises and Self-Care - Part II: 8 hr
Study different types of exercise that can help students understand body mechanics and movement for self-care as well as client referral for stress relief and/or workplace body mechanics. Instruction in different forms of movement therapies: Yoga (2 hr); Tai Chi (2 hr); Caring for the Caregiver Workshop (4 hr)

Fundamental Aspects of Massage Therapy: 9 hr
Describe professional touch, identify personal interpretations of touch and their influence on the professional interaction, study the influence of historical events on the current development of massage, define a scope of practice for massage therapy, define confidentiality and HIPAA, introduction to boundaries and ethics for professional massage and the intake procedures, define regulations governing MA massage therapy licensing of an individual, define regulations governing MA massage therapy working in a solo- or multi-person facility licensing

Boundaries and Ethics: 8 hr
Identify standards of professional behavior, establishing and maintaining respectful boundaries with clients, guidelines for ethical standards, and maintain a safe environment for the client and the massage therapist.

Resumé Writing: 4 hr
Develop a professional looking resumé and cover letter.

SOAP Notes: 2 hr
Skills for professional communications both verbal and in writing with client and health professionals, competently complete client forms.

Wellness Plans: 2 hr
Accurately obtain Informed Voluntary Consent and appropriately implement an Intervention Model.

Onsite Massage II

15 hours

Athletic Event Massage: 12 hr
Basic massage techniques to be used at sporting events.

Power of Touch in Massage Therapy: 3 hr
Identify and describe the physiological effects of touch and describe potential emotional effects of touch.

Swedish Massage

61 hours

2.0 credits

Study techniques of Swedish massage including stroke definitions and applications and learning a specific sequence of Swedish techniques

Structural Balancing Massage

83 hours

2.75 credits

Instruction in the use of oils, strokes, and pressure, including but not limited to trigger points, muscle release techniques, stretching and other massage techniques to reduce muscle pain and tension. Study how to apply this massage for relaxation, pain management and medical issues.

Structural Assessment

24 hours

0.75 credits

Structural Assessment techniques: 20 hr
Study causes of imbalance within the structural system, including postural tension and psychosocial issues. Study assessment techniques to find restrictions in movement patterns.

Table Movement: 2 hr
Gentle passive range of movement with the client to assess restrictions in the client's movement.

So Tai: 2 hr
Active, resisted movement to assess and correct movement restrictions.

Pathology for the Massage Therapist

36 hours

1.25 credits

Indications and Contraindications for Massage Therapy: 8 hr
Study of indications and contraindications for the application of massage and related pathology and referral techniques.

Universal Precautions: 2 hr
Study the use of universal precautions in the massage setting including instruction in infectious control policies and procedures.

Special Populations: 14 hr
Study the benefits of massage for special populations such as challenges of working with chiropractic clients pre- and post- adjustment, for people living with cancer, AIDS, special needs and diabetes. Discuss personal issues surrounding these populations. Assessing specific challenges and treatment for Chiropractic clients, Aids survivors, Cancer survivors, children living with special needs, the elderly and clients with diabetes

Working with Specific Challenges: 12 hr
Study the pathology of specific challenges: TMJ, fibromyalgia, headaches, neck pain, shoulder conditions, low back pain, and knee pain. Study massage techniques to use with these challenges. Study the use of heat and cold therapies for these challenges and in massage therapy.

Skilled Touch for the Seriously Ill

Learn to assess and work with seriously ill clients including people with AIDS, cancer, dementia, MS and other critical conditions. Discussion and practice of appropriate touch issues, contraindications, contagion, personal and public health considerations for working with critical conditions. Study treatment options for working with clients in hospice care who are in bed, sitting in a chair, and sitting in a wheelchair.

Learn the necessary aspects of arranging and attending an On-Site massage event such as offering chair massage at a business or event.

Clinic Preparation: 3 hr
Instruction in clinic preparation and management.

Clinic Supervision: 6 hr
Student supervisor during the student run clinic at STI , under the supervision of an instructor

Supervised Hands-on Practice: 81 hr
Working in the weekly student run, free clinic at Southeastern Technical  Institute (STI) providing massage to faculty and students of other evening programs. Weekly supervised hours at Heights Crossing nursing home working on clients and employees. Scheduled supervised hours working with the players of the Brockton Rox baseball team. Scheduled supervised hours working with UMass Dartmouth and Stonehill College students. Scheduled supervised hours at fund raisers such as, but not limited to, events for: Relay for Life, animal shelters, children with special needs, and breast cancer survivors.
