Term I

This first semester course introduces the beginning student to the basic concepts of microbiology, basic nutrition, and the structure and function of the healthy human body necessary to a solid science foundation for practical nursing.

The course examines the human life cycle from infancy through old age. Emphasis will be placed on the psychological development of the human being and the factors influencing changes that occur during each life stage. Study of major developmental theorists: Freud, Erikson, Maslow, and Kohlberg present a holistic viewpoint. The course includes specific age related health issues to assist the student in role related responsibilities.

INTRODUCTION TO PHARMACOLOGY  #50301, 90301

This course provides a review of basic arithmetic necessary for solving simple computations in dosage and solutions. Instruction in the metric, household systems of measurement, and of conversion from one system to another is included.  Instruction and practice in solving problems of divided dosage is provided.  Emphasis is placed upon basic information of commonly used drugs and safe drug administration.

This course introduces the student to nursing theory, nursing principles, and basic nursing. Course sequencing progresses from simple to complex. The nursing process is used as the framework for laboratory and clinical experiences. The following curriculum threads will be introduced in this course: collaboration, therapeutic communication, cultural diversity, caring, role responsibility, documentation, and holism. The course includes concurrent classroom, laboratory, and clinical components. Emphasis is placed on providing safety and comfort in client care. Clinical experiences are planned to provide the student with an opportunity to apply the principles of basic nursing care.

This supervised clinical practice is closely correlated with Fundamentals and takes place in medical-surgical adult settings in a community hospital.  Activities related to providing basic patient care and of developing an appropriate nurse-patient relationship are practiced.  Emphasis is placed upon the safe performance of technical skills based upon accepted principles and daily clinical objectives.

This course provides the essential information relative to the management of patients with health problems resulting from alterations in various body systems.  Emphasis is placed on providing safe and knowledgeable nursing care to patients of various age groups and utilizing critical thinking within the nursing process.  Clinical pharmacology, clinical nutrition, and vocational trends as well as concepts of growth and development and mental health are integrated throughout this course.  The role and responsibility of the LPN as an accountable health care provider in a variety of settings is developed.

Supervised clinical practice closely correlated with Care of Child, Adult, Aged is scheduled in the following areas: Pediatrics, Adult Medical and Surgical, Rehabilitation and Long Term.  The utilization of the nursing process is emphasized.

Term III

SENIOR PRACTICAL NURSING  #55101, 98001

Senior Nursing focuses on mental health issues and vocational trends.  Beginning with the concept of mental health, the student is introduced to common mental disorders.  Assessment skills, medical/surgical, pharmacological, and nursing interventions are highlighted. An additional topic is the nursing interventions appropriate for demanding or angry individuals. Course content also will focus on preparation in the following areas: taking the licensure examination, seeking employment, responsibilities of holding an entry level staff nurse position, and preparing for both higher education and continuing education.  Management, leadership, and delegation to unlicensed assistive personnel will be addressed.  Legal aspects of holding a license, endorsement in another state, good moral character, and discipline issues will also be explored.

This senior clinical practice takes place in adult medical and surgical settings. The student practices the role of team member with somewhat more freedom, consulting and clarifying with the instructor as necessary. Students plan and provide multi patient care, interact more purposefully with hospital nursing personnel, and actively participate in Patient Care Planning conferences.

CARE OF MOTHER AND NEWBORN  #55201, 95001

This course provides students with the theoretical foundation to provide nursing care to the maternal and newborn patient in a structured obstetrical unit of a community hospital.  Current concepts of family centered care provide the framework for this course. Safety, wellness, communication, and community resources will be stressed throughout the course, which includes information regarding pregnancy, parturition, puerperium, and care of the newborn.

This supervised clinical experience runs concurrently with Care of Mother and Newborn and provides experiences in prenatal (in MD office), labor and delivery, post-partum and newborn care.
